Breaking News from energyhelpline.com: the gas & electricity switching service that compares all energy suppliers – Shell chief calls for EU energy minister - 02/07/2007

Shell's chief executive has called for an energy minister to coordinate policy on the supply of gas from Russia.

The call for a new minister came after the announcement from Russian energy giant Gazprom that it would build a pipeline from the Black Sea to Europe in a deal with Italian energy firm Eni.

Chief executive Jeroen Van der Veer argued that too often member states were negotiating separate pipeline deals with foreign energy suppliers that sometimes rival each other.

A coordinated and common plan that deals with both foreign policy and energy security is needed, according to Mr Van der Veer.

"I don't think it makes sense that every country makes its own policy towards the supply of Russian gas. Only Brussels can do that," he said in an interview with the Times.

A new post of energy minister, that would perhaps be combined with the environment, is the solution, according to the Shell boss.

The new 900km pipeline that Gazprom and Eni will set up will run from the Black Sea to Bulgaria and supply Austria, Slovenia and Italy.

Recently Gazprom rejected overtures by the European Commission to sell off its interest in the Nordstream pipeline to link Russia and Germany.

Mark Todd of energyhelpline.com commented: "We all need to act together to ensure continued supplies and protect our market position."
