Renewable energy will be 'rewarded' by Tories - 04/10/2007

Householders who install renewable energy sources in their homes would be given the opportunity to sell any extra back to the national grid, the Tory party have pledged.

Outlining their policies at the Tory Party Conference, environment spokesman Peter Ainsworth said that the move would boost the market for local energy.

If elected, the party also plan to introduce a heat levy to power stations to encourage energy efficiency.

The levy would encourage energy suppliers to capture heat and re-use it, instead of leaving it to go into the atmosphere.

Mr Ainsworth said: "Our aim is to create real incentives to drive the market."

He also said that the party would support more competitive tariffs for emerging renewable technologies.
