Energy supplier pulls out of wind project - 02/07/2008

Major energy supplier E.ON has pulled out of a planned wind farm project near Ferndale, citing fears over noise pollution levels for nearby homes.

The company's investment in the wind farm, set to be constructed with eight separate turbines capable of generating 10MW of clean energy, was pulled when it was discovered that amendments made to the farm to satisfy noise level concerns would mean the installation would fail to satisfy output demands.

Danny Shaw, head of new business for E.ON, said: "We've looked at a number of solutions to make this project work but, ultimately, we've determined that the largest scheme possible for the site would be under 5MW, which is not big enough to meet our criteria for new onshore wind developments."

E.ON currently runs two separate wind farms in Wales. Rhyd-y-Groes consists of 24 turbines while a smaller plant in Ceredigion has eight turbines.

The government recently announced plans to develop a further 11 wind farms around the UK, but many local residents have objected because of worries over noise pollution and fears over installations becoming an eyesore on the landscape.
