Environmental group calls for cheaper ways to go green - 03/07/2008

Environmental group Friends of the Earth has called for the government to introduce easier and cheaper ways for people to go green.

The group is campaigning for a stronger government drive behind green living practices in our everyday lives, at the same time as a new guide is published by the UN Environment Programme entitled Kick the CO2 habit.

Neil Verlander, spokesperson at Friends of the Earth, said: "It's a combination of urging people to do the right thing, giving people incentives to do the right thing but also setting regulations to make sure that there is greener behaviour by companies and that greener products are on sale."

The organisation calls for specific action such as cheaper public transport to wean people away from their cars, better incentives to install domestic clean energy equipment, and generally ensuring that environmentally friendly action is the cheapest around.

The UN Kick the CO2 habit guide includes measures such as avoiding the use of tumble-dryers in doing the washing, using energy-efficient light bulbs and shutting down electronics when they are not in use.
