Decision to switch energy companies could benefit Carshalton and Wallington - 04/03/2009

A decision to pursue cheap energy rates with different energy companies could help residents in Carshalton and Wallington reduce their fuel bills.

According to the Liberal Democrats' website, Consumer Focus has found that over 5,600 households in the Greater London region are currently living in fuel poverty, a figure that accounts for 15 per cent of all the local residents in the area.

In response, local MP Tom Brake is calling on all MPs to support the Fuel Poverty Bill while he has also called on the government to do more to reduce consumer energy prices.

Mr Brake said on the website: "[Energy companies] make huge profits while, as the recession bites here in Carshalton and Wallington, more and more people are being faced with the dreadful choice between heating and eating."

He added that the major energy companies should pay for the domestic insulation proposed by the Fuel Poverty Bill, while supporting it would also stop the use of prepayment meters.

In late 2008 the government decided to promote energy efficiency rather than impose a windfall tax on energy companies.
