Survey: Lack of cheap broadband access causes anxiety in many - 19/10/2009

Broadband comparison research has revealed that many people experience higher levels of stress and anxiety when they do not have access to a cheap broadbandconnection.

The research, commissioned by internet service provider Virgin Media and carried out by Future Laboratory, found that 36 per cent of respondents feel anxious that they cannot keep in touch with family when they lose their connection.

In terms of working environments, nearly 30 per cent of workers admitted to a feeling of being 'unshackled' when they were not using the internet, although a similar number experienced stress instead.

Zara Rabinowicz, technology expert at Stuff Magazine, said: "Products like mobiles and laptops become lifelines to the outside world, whether it's a chat to your mum, or an update on a Facebook page. When this gets cut off, withdrawal symptoms quickly occur."

Half of stay-at-home parents get a feeling of relaxation from having a web connection open all the time, the research revealed.
