Expert predicts cheap energy feed-in tariffs will be popular - 06/04/2010

The new feed-in tariffs, which pay people for the cheap energy they generate, is expected to be very popular, an expert has said.

Gordon Miller, founder of whatgreenhome.com, said people are likely to be encouraged to install photovoltaics by the financial incentives that will be offered.

"People are now being paid not only for the electricity that they sell back to the electricity companies and to the national grid, but for the electricity that they generate as well," he said. "I think it definitely will encourage people to take up the scheme."

He added that the government should do more to encourage people to focus on cheap energy and improve their efficiency.

However, a happy medium should be struck because there is a danger that people may start to be turned off by the whole eco argument, Mr Miller pointed out.

According to the Department of Energy and Climate Change, a typical 2.5kW, well sited solar PV installation could offer savings of £140 a year plus earnings of £900 per annum.
