Europe and North Africa 'must align their cheap energy policies' - 07/05/2010

A new report has called for Europe to align its sustainable cheap energy policies with North Africa to promote progress in the renewable sector.

According to the report, published by PricewaterhouseCoopers, there is currently a gap between the state of the power market in the EU and North Africa which needs to be bridged over the coming decades, reports New Energy Focus.

The study, co-devised by the European Climate Forum and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, the production of renewable cheap energy should take place in the most suitable sites across Europe and North Africa as both regions strive for 100 per cent renewable electricity by 2050.

Professor Michael Hulme, from the University of East Anglia, said: "This report represents a major milestone in that effort of unravelling the Gordain knot of policy, and finding workable solutions.

"Given a likely transition towards using electricity to power a greater share of transport, the power system will be the cornerstone of the energy system."
