Cornwall 'one of the best places for recycling and cheap energy' - 10/05/2010

Cornwall has been found to be one of the best places in the country for recycling and making use of sustainable cheap energy.

A new report from Cornwall Council's senior waste policy officer ranks the county 15th out of 81 authorities, with a recycling rate of 36.23 per cent, reports the Western Morning News.

The study reveals that householders across the county send almost a quarter of their domestic waste to dry recycling collections, while just under 12 per cent of wet waste such as foodstuffs is recycled.

Cornwall is amid plans to introduce a £300 million incinerator in the middle of the county's countryside in order to harness cheap energy from waste matter.

The plant is expected to have the capacity to process 240,000 tonnes of municipal waste every year. The incinerator would be able to handle all of Cornwall's domestic waste and convert it into electricity and heat to power 21,000 homes.

There is speculation that the cheap energy generating plant could provide business energy to small local firms.
