E.ON hikes gas and electricity prices - 12/01/2011

Consumers might want to switch energy after hearing that E.ON has raised prices for its residential customers.

The energy provider has increased cheap electricity prices by nine per cent and cheap gas costs by three per cent, with the changes set to come into effect on February 4th.

Householders on the WarmAssist scheme will be protected from the hikes, which come as a response to wholesale energy price rises that have become 35 per cent more expensive since last spring.

Mark Todd, director of Energyhelpline.com, noted that consumers do not have to take the increases "lying down".

"It's clear that energy bills still remain as many homes' biggest expense," he pointed out.

"The average household fuel bill is expected to shoot up by nearly 20 per cent to a record £658 a quarter this winter. We would certainly advise UK consumers to seriously take stock of their gas and electricity suppliers and shop around for a better deal now if they want to avoid future financial pain."
