British Gas criticised over boiler repair costs - 26/03/2012

Individuals looking to compare energy tariffs and heat cover options may consider shopping around to ensure they are getting the best deals, after it was alleged one energy supplier is overcharging for parts.

The Daily Telegraph reports one Scottish pensioner, Robert Halbert, was quoted £390.16 by engineers from British Gas for essential items such as copper piping and a wireless thermostat.

However, Mr Halbert was able to find the same parts at a home DIY store for just £125.73.

He accused the gas and electricity provider of "creative pricing" by bundling the expenses for parts and labour into a single cost, making it difficult to tell exactly what he was paying for.

Labour MP for Rutherglen and Hamilton West Tom Greatrex added: "It simply does not stack up that British Gas pay more for parts then the general public buying the same products at their local DIY store."

The firm has since apologised to Mr Halbert for the inconvenience and made an offer of compensation.

Recently, British Gas reminded individuals of the importance of having their boiler checked every year by a Gas Safe Register qualified engineer.
