switchandgive.com - Energy Bill 'must not subsidise nuclear'

The Scottish government has warned the proposed Energy Bill must concentrate on helping develop cheap energy from renewables rather than subsidising the nuclear industry.

Giving evidence to Holyrood's Enterprise, Energy and Tourism Committee, energy minister Fergus Ewing said the legislation needs to support green sources.

He said: "This could be a real opportunity to support and encourage low carbon energy and we want to make it work, but we cannot be in favour of subsidies for nuclear energy."

Mr Ewing added the Scottish government expects to be a full partner in discussions with Westminster about the country's future strategy and not just a consultee.

The country has "astounding green energy potential", he continued, adding the sector needs certainty in order to invest in this area.

Announcing the Energy Bill earlier this year, energy and climate change secretary Ed Davey said the reforms will ensure the UK is able to keep the lights on, reduce electricity bills and cut the amount of carbon emitted by the nation.
